Performs necessary duties as assigned during racing and sales as well as throughout calendar year assigned by the Vice President of EquineSafety in coordination with the Equine Safety and Compliance Lead. Does not have authority to carry a firearm.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.Other duties may be assigned.

  • Conductsreal-timeobservation and surveillance on grounds at The Thoroughbred Center tomonitorhorse and trainer activitieswhile supporting the roles ofThe Thoroughbred CenterDirector and Clocker positions.
  • Activelymonitorsracetrack surfaces and all participants, equine and human, during racing and training activities for safety compliance
  • Activelyparticipatesin population documentation and validation of equine census in stabling areasprimarily focused on compliance atThe Thoroughbred Centerin cooperation with stable office and management teams.
  • Documentsand recordstimed public works captured onThe Thoroughbred Centergroundsin accordance withinventory management practices thatmaintainthe standards for meeting compliance requirements for publishing those workouts.
  • Entry of data for compliance andaccuratereporting in the Equibase System and the In Compass Track Manager System.
  • WorkswithThe Thoroughbred CenterDirector and EquineSafety Compliance Lead of active monitoringand inspectionof the equine population(to include microchip validation)assigned to individual trainers stabled atThe Thoroughbred Centerin compliance to itsstandardsheld inThe Thoroughbred CenterStable agreement. 
  • Maintainsan accurate record of any TB horses presented outsideThe Thoroughbred Centerinventory for timed public works and acquisition of required documentationpriorto access ofThe Thoroughbred Centersurfaces for exercise or training, in accordance with direction from Vice President of Equine Safety and/orThe Thoroughbred CenterDirector.
  • Must be familiarwithinjury response protocols (to include two-way radio etiquette and telephonic transmissions) for efficient, effective, andtimelydirection of resources for equine and human situations and theaccuratecommunication and documentation of such events.
  • Oversightand preparationof the documentation of any equine or human injury responses occurring on site during hours of operation atThe Thoroughbred Center(orKeenelandwhen applicable) along with a familiarity of process and standard guidelines for capturing pertinent identifying information
  • Worksclosely in this role duringKeenelandRace Meets supporting the activities related to the Receiving Barn locationwith its specific protocolsand such other duties asdesignatedby the Vice President of Equine Safety that may be identified with race meet responsibilities
  • Reviewslive horse barn surveillance camerafootage andpreviously recordedfootage and familiarity with monitoring surveillance tools at both Keenelandand The ThoroughbredCenter.
  • Provides monitoring and oversight duringKeenelandsales of equineactivitiesassociated with safe transfer and movement throughout thegrounds to include barnareas, stablecrossings,stable officeand alternate chute locations, roadways, and salespavilionassociated surroundings.
  • Plays an active role and participationofequine monitoring for biosecurity compliance at Keeneland and The Thoroughbred Center.
  • Observesanddocumentsany potential violations of regulatory compliance in keeping with the rules of racing and training (HISA and KHRCG) and potential integrity violations (environmental contamination of premises, inadvertent or intentional access violations, etc.)
  • AlertsSecurity Patrol Officers, in conjunction with the Vice President of Equine Safety, of any observations in barn areaswhen:
  • a blatant violation is observed
  • a situation isobservedrequiring further clarity patrol response
  • a hazard or danger to a horse (to include mistreatment of horses), or to the barn environment
  • a barn rule is violated
  • an inappropriate behavior is observed amongst barn workers
  • Assists the Vice President of Equine Safety in coordination of duties with Equine Safety and Compliance Lead in all aspects of equine and human safety initiatives, as needed and identified.
  • May be tasked with additional surveillance responsibilities through out the calendar year.
  • Thoroughly documents activities conducted, areas of concern, and report as appropriate to any issues related to equine safety matters or integrity concerns as noted.
  • Worksclosely with stable office staff at both Keeneland and The Thoroughbred Centerinmaintainingcompliance with documented health records and vaccination requirements asstipulatedby shipping protocolsand any current guidelinesrelativeto equine disease surveillance.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must have the ability to read and write, and efficiently navigate PC and Camera software
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent qualificationpreferred
  • Applicantsmust have a flexible schedule and be willing to work varying hours throughoutcalendaryear with minimal advanced notice.
  • Possess good verbal communication skills andbecapable of interacting positively with others.
  • Must bewilling to work with Equine Safety team members throughout the year as may bedesignatedby the Vice President of Equine Safety or the Equine Safety and Compliance Lead on the grounds at Keeneland for racing and/or sales 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess Kentucky Driver's License and be able to attain a Kentucky Horse Racing License in which Keeneland will provide at the time of hire.
